21st Annual Workshop Application Information

We are not yet accepting applications for the 2020 Annual Workshop. 

 

This application has two parts – an online form and a set of required inclusions. Read thoroughly before applying for the workshop below.

Application packages (online form and required enclosures together) will be used to evaluate applicants. Any hard copies of application materials will not be returned.

All application forms and required enclosures must be submitted in English. Application packages in languages other than English will not be reviewed.

Application packages that are not complete by midnight, U.S. Eastern Time, on February 18, 2019, will not be reviewed.

Please send:
1) Resume
Send your resume as a PDF document. Your resume should list all positions you have held as a professional journalist. Freelancers, include a representative list of your top ten pieces from the past two years, including title, date, and news outlet for each.

2) Statement of Interest
Provide a 500-word statement of interest in the Metcalf Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists explaining how your participation in this Metcalf workshop would benefit your work and your news audience(s).

3) Professional Work Samples
Work samples should only include reporting that was published or aired by a news outlet. Your application package may include samples from various media types. See further instructions below. All samples must be either in English or submitted with an English translation.

–Print/web: Two (2) work samples are required. Send individual PDFs of articles OR a single document listing working web links (URLs) where your articles can be easily accessed. Clips must be legible and dated with news outlet visible.

–Broadcast/film/documentary/multimedia: Include a document listing web links for two (2) work samples in film, web, television, and/or radio. Include dates, titles, and outlets.

–Photojournalism: Send a PDF of work, or a document listing web links (URLs) of up to 15 photographs, with the date and news outlet for each and brief annotations as desired.

4) References
Two letters of reference are required and should be sent via email from the author directly to fellowships@metcalfinstitute.org or mailed to the address above. The deadline for applications for the 2019 Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists was February 18, 2019. References should evaluate your abilities as a journalist and specifically comment on the potential impacts of the Metcalf fellowship on your work. One letter must be from your current immediate supervisor or, for freelancers, from an editor who has most recently worked with you.
