Communicating Science to the Public

Master Gardeners have a deep base of knowledge to share about horticulture, soil science, and food systems. But their target audiences may not share a familiarity with this scientific jargon and research. Metcalf Institute will hold a science communication workshop to provide new participants in the University of Rhode Island Master Gardner program with the tools to enhance their outreach efforts.

Metcalf Institute Executive Director Sunshine Menezes will give an overview of the fundamentals of effective science communication and provide tips on how to tailor compelling messages to engage various audiences.

Following her presentations, participants will practice new skills during an interactive session designed to help distill complex information into concise and interesting talking points for broader audiences.

Cooperative Extension provides non-formal education and learning opportunities to people throughout the United States — to farmers and other residents of rural communities as well as to people living in urban areas. It emphasizes taking knowledge gained through research and education and bringing it directly to the people to create positive changes.
