10:00-10:15 a.m. Welcome and Introductions
10:15-11:15 Developing a Compelling Message: How to Engage Different Audiences
Courtney St. John, Climate Nexus
Effective communication requires an understanding of your audiences and messaging and framing that resonate with those audiences. St. John, director of the Energy Transition Desk at Climate Nexus, will share tools and strategies for discussing climate change risks and transitioning to a clean energy economy.
11:15-12:15 Breakout Session I: Developing Your Message
Working in teams, and with guidance from trainers, participants will develop messages and relevant frames for different target audiences, focusing on the teams’ campaign interests. After doing this as a group, each team member will develop and revise talking points related to their organization or for a specific campaign.
12:15-1:00 Networking Lunch
1:00-1:30 Breakout Session I: Discussion
In a facilitated discussion with the trainers and each other, participants will discuss lessons and outstanding questions and ideas from Breakout Session I.
1:45-2:45 Working with Journalists: Pitching Stories and Preparing for an Interviews

LaMonica, a veteran energy journalist and Deputy Editor of the news analysis and commentary site, The Conversation, will describe how best to prepare for a press interview and how to develop productive, trusting relationships with reporters. In addition, this session will clarify the aspects of a press inquiry or news release that makes them interesting and newsworthy.
2:45-4:00 Breakout Session II: Giving Your Best Interview
Working in groups, participants will practice pitching and participating in interviews with guidance and feedback from trainers. This will be a chance for participants to test the messages they developed earlier in the day.
4:00-4:30 Workshop Wrap-Up
In this final discussion participants can discuss lingering questions with trainers and identify next-steps for their communication strategies or future training programs.
