1:30 – 1:40 p.m. Welcome and Introductions
Sunshine Menezes, Metcalf Institute

1:40 p.m.-1:55 p.m.
Conveying Scientific Data with Visuals
Neal Overstrom, Rhode Island School of Design
Using his experience as a designer of scientific exhibits, Overstrom will share his insights on the effective organization of ideas through visual elements, rather than relying solely upon text.
1:55 p.m. – 2:10 p.m. Principles of Poster Design
Micah Barrett, Rhode Island School of Design
Barrett, a graphic designer who specializes in design for print, will discuss practical techniques for improving poster design, such as the use of color and different type fonts.
2:10- 2:50 p.m. Interactive Poster Design
Participants will break into one of four groups to create an idealized scientific poster using the design techniques discussed previously. Graphic design experts will join the speakers to serve as coaches for this session.
2:50 – 3:30 p.m. Critique and Discussion
Once the break-out groups have finished their poster templates, speakers and coaches will offer critiques and suggestions. This will also be an opportunity for discussion of how to improve the design of several sample posters provided by participants.
3:30 p.m. Adjourn
