21 Finalists Selected for Metcalf Institute’s Annual Workshop

The University of Rhode Island’s Metcalf Institute has selected 21 finalists for its 2019 Annual Science Immersion Workshop for Journalists. Ten of these finalists will be selected as Metcalf Fellows to attend the Workshop, June 2-7, at the URI Graduate School of Oceanography.

The finalists were selected from a competitive pool of more than 100 applicants representing 17 nations. The journalists report for a wide variety of small to large print, broadcast, and web-based outlets serving local to international audiences, including New Jersey’s Community News Service, Grist, Mountain West News, The Philadelphia Inquirer, El Tiempo, Daily News Egypt, Beacon Communications, and E&E News.

Climate change and water
The intensive, weeklong workshop will focus on water, which the United Nations identified as “the primary medium through which we will experience the effects of climate change.” The ten Metcalf Fellows will explore ways in which climate change and other human activities affect global water supplies.

Journalists will discuss links between water and climate systems, discover the value of long-term data collection, and explore techniques for measuring and addressing water quality and quantity problems that affect communities and aquatic ecosystems. The Fellows will leave with a deeper understanding of the scientific research process, new story ideas and contacts, and more confidence in their abilities to cover environmental and other science-based news stories.
