The deadline for applications for the 25th Annual Science Immersion Workshop is now closed. We will open applications for the 2024 Fellowship in the fall of 2023.
The Metcalf fellowship application package has three required parts: an application form, a resume, and professional references via an online form.
Applications are submitted electronically. All application forms, resumes and references must be submitted in English; application packages in languages other than English will not be reviewed.
Metcalf Institute strives to create a diverse Fellowship cohort; journalists of color, as well as those who are LGBTQIA+ and/or are disabled, are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants must complete the application form and send the enclosures no later than 11:59 p.m. EST, Monday, February 6, 2023, to be considered for a fellowship.
APPLICATION FORM
Applications are submitted via SurveyMonkey. Be advised that some web browsers do not enable you to exit and re-enter SurveyMonkey to continue with your application. Therefore, applicants are strongly encouraged to view the sample application as a PDF in advance in order to be prepared to complete the application in a single online session.
The application requires that you select two samples of your reporting (or up to 15 photographs for photojournalists) that have been published or aired by a news outlet within the past 24 months (or 3 years for photojournalists). The original date and venue of publication or broadcast must be easily identifiable. You may choose samples from different media and/or outlets. All samples must be in English or an English translation must be provided as part of the application package. You may submit work samples as web links or as a PDF file. Links to work samples must be fully functional and the samples must be accessible without a paywall.
Any issues with completing or submitting the application form or work samples should be reported to Phoebe.neel@uri.edu immediately and no later than 11:59 p.m. EST, Monday, February 6, 2023. Application forms must be submitted by midnight EST, Monday February 6, 2023, to be considered for a 2023 Metcalf fellowship.
RESUME
Upload your resume as a PDF document as part of the application form. The resume should list all positions you have held as a professional journalist, including freelance work. The application form is not complete without a resume.
REFERENCES
Two professional references are required via a Metcalf Workshop Reference Form. These two people should be able to evaluate the potential impacts of the Metcalf fellowship on your work and your news audience(s). One reference form must be completed by your current immediate supervisor or, for freelancers, an editor who has most recently worked with you. Applicants should direct authors of their professional references to this page for access to the Metcalf Workshop Reference Form.
Your professional references must be completed by 11:59 p.m. EST, Monday, February 6, 2023 for your application to be considered for a fellowship.
